]]>The distillery is selling lots of gorgeous Irish and Dublin focused products so that their visitors can take a bit of the city home with them. That’s where I came in! Not only did they want my Moore Street, Poolbeg, Street Sign (James Street) and Great Outdoors designs, they also wanted me to make a custom magnet for the distillery.
The ‘Dublin In The Pear Auld Times’ magnet is inspired by a gorgeous ancient pear tree that sits on their grounds and still flowers to this day. It’s a proud part of their story so I brought it and the famous windmill tower into the design to make it special for them – see below...
All of this started last January when I met the lovely Alan from Diageo at Showcase Ireland. I’m lucky that people react really well to my ‘unique’!! designs and when someone from such a large organisation gets excited about them too it makes it all worth while. We worked together over the following months to pick the right products and develop their new design.
It all finally came together on the 21st June when they launched their fabulous distillery and Quirky is officially on display along all the other fantastic Dublin products. They will be opening a larger shop space very soon so we will be looking at larger amounts of Quirky magnets flying off the shelves and into thousands of suitcases heading across the world!
A very proud moment for this happy Irish Grandma :)

]]>Every Saturday, I showcase my work in The Gravediggers, a traditional Irish pub in Glasnevin. The Gravediggers has been a part of Dublin since 1833, and still has some great old features from that time. It's run by the 8th generation of Kavanaghs to be behind the bar. Creamy pints are enjoyed with no television or radio, just good old-fashioned conversations.
Last summer I met Ciaran Kavanagh and his wife Freda and they liked my icons so much that they invited me to show them in their pub every week. Freda said she felt they were a “real piece of Dublin to have as a keepsake.”
Every week I’m there, I meet some characters. Eileen for one, who has become a real friend. She’s cleaned the pub for 20 odd years and has a tale or two to tell about it! The pub has a great atmosphere, very welcoming and is just a great place to meet some true Dublin characters.
Feel free to call in and join us at John Kavanagh The Gravediggers, Glasnevin, Dublin 9, I’m there every Saturday from 12-4pm.
See you there
Patricia

]]>It was an amazing experience from start to finish. I was one of 9 businesses to meet the Taoiseach and Minister for Social Protection, Regina Doherty. The event was to kick off a campaign highlighting new benefits for business owners that were introduced in the new Budget. Besides the Taoiseach and Minister, there were loads of other people, including their advisers and staff, a few journalists and of course the staff at City Hall. I was so nervous meeting them, but I couldn't get over how lovely they all were. Even in the few minutes that I got to meet them, they put me at ease and chatted away, like old pals.
The Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar is a very tall and handsome fella and he smelt fab! For such an important man, he was very friendly, mannerly and down to earth, even shy. Basically, a son every Ma would love! I felt like I had just met somebody I knew all my life.
I wasn’t nervous to speak to him but felt grateful to be able to meet the leader of our country, to be able to speak about my business and to present him with his own quirky Irish Icons.
The whole experience was brilliant, but I was over the moon when I realised how much the Taoiseach enjoyed his gift. He even suggested that I “need to be in the airport with these!” and named Quirky Irish Icons as one of his favourite business at the end of the day.
The highlight of the day was presenting the Taoiseach with a handmade gift from Quirky Irish Icons for his office. I'm dying to see a photo of him in his office soon with my quirky Irish icons hanging on the wall.
]]>In one way I was destined to set up Quirky Irish Icons. After my lovely family, I have two great loves in my life - Dublin and art.
I love everything about Dublin - the people and communities, the walkable city with those fantastic buildings and coast line, and the Dublin wit and unmistakable lyrical accent.
The whole island of Ireland is special to me and I am so proud of it. Which is why, no matter where I travel in the world, I always get the grá to come back home!
In 2016, there was a buzz of activity all over Ireland with the centenary celebrations for the 1916 rising. I was asked to be an ambassador for the 1916 commemoration in City Hall, it was one of the proudest moments of my life (along with meeting Leo). It was such a proud moment for myself and such a historic time for the whole country.
We're not great here in Ireland at giving or taking compliments, especially in the good aul days. God forbid we'd be getting notions and getting above our station.
I’ve always enjoyed making things, even as a kid, I was good at art. The only nice thing though, that was ever said to me in school, was when my art teacher Ms Maine gave me a compliment on my work. At the time, I wasn’t used to praise at school, so I looked at her puzzled and she answered, “Credit where's it's due!” When I went home, I had to ask me Ma what that meant!
Dublin + art = Quirky Irish Icons, sure what else would I be doing?
